A few years ago, if someone had asked me to teach a Business English lesson on cybersecurity, I probably would have suggested another topic. Leadership? Absolutely. Negotiations? No problem. Marketing? I’ve taught those for years. Cybersecurity, however, felt like a completely different world.

Like many English teachers, I’m not an IT professional. I don’t build networks or investigate cybercrime. At first, the idea of teaching cybersecurity felt intimidating because I worried about explaining technical concepts accurately and answering questions that might go beyond my expertise.

Then something changed. Cybersecurity stopped being an IT topic and became a life skill.

Almost every week, we hear about another ransomware attack, data breach, phishing scam, AI-generated deepfake, or company losing millions because of a single human mistake. Suddenly, cybersecurity wasn’t something that only concerned software engineers. It became relevant to HR managers, accountants, marketers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, teachers, students, and anyone who uses a computer or smartphone.

Our students encounter these stories every day. They discuss them with colleagues, read about them in the news, and sometimes become victims themselves. Whether they work in finance, healthcare, education, sales, customer service, or simply use the internet, they need enough cybersecurity knowledge to understand what’s happening around them. Not because they want to become cybersecurity experts, but because they want to become informed, digitally literate professionals.

When I decided to introduce cybersecurity into my Business English classes, I assumed there would be plenty of high-quality teaching materials available.

There weren’t.

Most resources fell into one of two categories. They were either highly technical articles written for IT professionals or simple vocabulary worksheets with very little opportunity for meaningful communication. Very few were designed specifically for B2-C1 Business English learners who wanted to discuss cybersecurity confidently without becoming cybersecurity engineers.

So I created my own.
